The soils evaluation competition is a career development event co-hosted by Indiana FFA and Indiana 4-H. During the competitions, students have the opportunity to climb into large soil pits and identify several soil properties including parent material, slope, landform, soil texture, natural soil drainage capacity, level of erosion, and the presence of any soil limiting layers. Using this information, students then make recommendations for that soil location based on its suitability for a homesite or an agriculture field.
